Chiropractic Care | The Gonstead Approach

The Gonstead system was developed by Dr. Clarence Gonstead, and is the most advanced and thorough approach of full-spine chiropractic care. Dr. Gonstead saw patients from around the world in his clinic in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin. This technique takes years of practice and dedication in order to provide you the most precise and accurate adjustment possible. Who was Dr. Gonstead? Learn more

The body’s foundation begins with a stable and level pelvis in order to provide balance to the spinal column. When a spinal vertebra tilts or rotates out of its normal position or begins to bend and move improperly, this places an uneven pressure or load on the discs of the spine and causes other areas of the body to compensate. This can lead not only to pain, but also to abnormal function of the nerves that travel through the small openings of the spine to the various tissues and regions of the body. As a result, any of the neurologically related areas of the body are prime targets for abnormal function and various health issues.

With an unparalleled attention to detail, a chiropractor using the Gonstead system uses 5 criteria to determine if a patient can benefit from chiropractic care:

1. Visualization. Dr. Ashman will do a careful visual inspection of posture, movement and gait (walking), as well as inspect the tissues around the spine.

2. Instrumentation. By using a very sensitive and specialized instrument to detect small heat imbalances along the spine, Dr. Ashman is further able to focus in on the problem areas of misalignment, abnormal joint pressure and potential nerve inflammation.

3. Static Palpation. This process involves palpating or feeling the spine for swelling, abnormal tone, texture and muscle tissue changes.

4. Motion Palpation. This includes the doctor feeling for subtle areas of abnormal spinal joint motion in various bending movements.

5. X-rays. X-rays are taken, when indicated, so that the doctor can visualize your spine, coordinate all of the other findings, locate any areas of spinal arthritis or malformations, make sure there are no contraindications to chiropractic care, and determine the best way to adjust your spine. The Gonstead system uses specialized weight-bearing x-rays to visualize the entire spine under gravitational stress.

Stabilizing Exercises

Dr. Ashman can customize an exercise and stretching program to help with the correction of any biomechanical imbalances and speed up your recovery. Stabilizing exercises can be beneficial so that your condition does not immediately return after a course of chiropractic care.

Complementary Spinal Screening

Dr. Ashman offers a complementary 10-point chiropractic screening evaluation for family members of patients so that any developing spinal problems can be detected early.
